pencil drawing done from a reference of the Shagya Arabian Stallion O'Bajan XIII, "The Black Pearl of Hungary" in fancy show tack. Photograph was taken sometime between his birth in 1949 and 1965, when the book I found the photo in was published. No photographer was cited for the photo.
The original is on an 8 1/2 by 11 page in a sketchbook. Drawn with a cheap pencil and smoothed out with a kneaded eraser. I'd never used one before. Interesting little widgets. The sketch was resized to be a bit smaller and tinted sepia in Macromedia Fireworks. I've found the "convert to sepai tone" tends to show off scanned pencil sketches better than greyscaling them or leaving them the original slightly bluish cast of an unfiltered scan.
This one was done with a photo reference. I find sometimes that its much easier to draw from black and white photo referance than color because its easier to focus on the line and shading. You don't get as distracted by the color. Maybe grabbing a bunch of black and white photos to sketch from might make it easier.
I draw so infrequently that I often get discouraged when I do sit down to do something. Half the time I never finish since I go "arg! This is such crud I don't even feel like finishing it even for practice sake!"
